Responsible Gambling
Responsible gambling means keeping play affordable, time-limited and within your control. This page explains the tools that help, what GAMSTOP does and does not cover, and the extra risks of playing at sites outside it. It also lists where to get free support. Facts were last checked on 1 October 2026.
Disclosure: Non Gamstop Casinos may earn commission if you join a casino through links on our site. Commission does not decide rankings, and it does not change the advice here. You can read more on our About Us page.
You must be 18 or over to gamble. Gambling is entertainment with a cost. It is not income, and it is not a fix for money worries.
What GAMSTOP is and where it stops
GAMSTOP is the free national self-exclusion service for online gambling in Great Britain. When you register, every online operator licensed by the UK Gambling Commission must block your account and stop marketing to you. You can choose an exclusion period of six months, one year or five years. Once the period starts, it cannot be shortened.
Sites described as "non GamStop" are not part of that scheme. Many hold overseas licences instead, for example from Curaçao. Some accept British customers, but accepting British customers is not the same as being authorised by the UK Gambling Commission to serve them. If you have registered with GAMSTOP, using these sites undermines the protection you chose for yourself.
Our reviews of non GamStop casinos describe how these sites work. Please read this page first if gambling has ever felt difficult to control.
Who should avoid non GamStop sites altogether
These sites are not a sensible choice if any of the following applies:
- You are currently registered with GAMSTOP, or you registered in the past because gambling was causing harm.
- You have been chasing losses, borrowing to gamble or hiding your play.
- You are gambling to escape stress, low mood or money pressure.
- You feel tempted to switch sites because your usual one has limited you.
If you recognise yourself here, step back and use the support listed below.
The extra risks of playing outside UK regulation
UK-licensed operators must follow rules on affordability checks, fair terms, complaint handling and access to an approved dispute service. Overseas-licensed sites follow the rules of their own licensing body. Those rules can differ a great deal, and your recourse in a dispute may be limited.
- Safeguards may be weaker. Deposit limits, loss limits and self-exclusion may be optional, harder to find or less strictly enforced. Check what each site offers before you deposit.
- Bonus terms can encourage heavy play. Large welcome packages usually come with wagering requirements, maximum bet rules, expiry dates and cashout caps. Read them beside every offer.
- Withdrawals are not guaranteed. Identity checks, source-of-funds checks and withdrawal limits can delay payouts. Disputes may be hard to resolve.
- Currency and fees. Some offers are in euros or dollars. Conversion costs and card or crypto fees can add to your losses.
No casino can be called completely safe, and nobody can promise withdrawals or winnings.
Bonuses and how they can push you to spend more
Our ranked list includes headline offers such as 570% up to £5,700 plus 270 free spins, or a £1,000 bonus with 100 free spins. Big numbers make a bonus look attractive, but they also raise the amount you may have to wager before you can withdraw. As a general rule:
- A larger match bonus usually means a larger total turnover target.
- Free spins often carry their own wagering and win caps.
- Bonus cashback is a return on losses, not a way to get money back for free.
- You can usually decline a bonus. Doing so keeps play simpler and easier to stop.
Before you accept anything, work out the real cost. For example, a £100 deposit with a 100% match and a 35x requirement on the bonus alone means £3,500 of bets. Wagering terms vary by site, so always check the exact figures on the casino's own terms page.
If an offer encourages you to deposit more than planned, skip it.
Tools that keep play under control
| Tool | What it does | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Caps what you can add per day, week or month | Set it before your first deposit, not after a bad session |
| Loss limit | Caps net losses over a period | Not offered everywhere, so check before joining |
| Session reminders | Show how long you have played | Useful, but easy to dismiss |
| Casino self-exclusion | Blocks your account at that one site | Does not cover other sites |
| GAMSTOP | Blocks UK-licensed online operators | Does not cover non GamStop sites |
| Blocking software | Stops gambling sites loading on your devices | Works across sites, including those outside GAMSTOP |
Blocking software and bank gambling blocks are the most practical ways to cover sites that GAMSTOP cannot reach. Many UK banks let you block gambling transactions in their apps.
Setting a budget that holds
- Decide a monthly amount from spare money only, never rent, bills or borrowed funds.
- Set that figure as a deposit limit.
- Decide a time limit for each session.
- Treat the deposit as spent. If it runs out, stop.
- Do not reverse a withdrawal to keep playing.
- Keep a note of what you have spent each month.
Warning signs worth taking seriously
- Spending more than you planned, or more time than you meant to
- Chasing losses with bigger bets
- Lying about how much you gamble
- Feeling anxious, irritable or low when you are not playing
- Missing bills, borrowing or selling things to fund play
- Gambling in secret, or feeling shame afterwards
One or two of these is a reason to pause. Several together is a reason to talk to someone.
Game types and how they affect your spending
Different games carry different risks. Slots are fast. Each spin takes seconds, and high volatility can mean long losing runs and rare large wins. Return to player (RTP) is a long-run average, not a prediction for your session. Progressive jackpots are very unlikely to be won. Live dealer blackjack, roulette and baccarat feel social, but the house edge still applies. Sports betting adds in-play markets, accumulators and cash-out, which can speed up spending. Where a site shares one wallet between casino and sportsbook, money can move between products quickly, so keep track of your total.
How the casinos on our list fit in
The sites in our ranking, such as Betmica, Kikibet, Betninja, WinnerIsland, Zombillion, Smash Casino, Nightluck, CoinPoker, Rivo and Daytonaspin, are listed because of the features we reviewed. Those features include offer terms, payment options, game range and available controls. We have not played at them or verified their safeguards ourselves, and we do not claim they are safe. A rating is our editorial view, not a customer score.
Before depositing at any of them, check:
- Which licence the site states, and whether the regulator's own register confirms it
- Whether GBP accounts are offered, or whether currency conversion will apply
- Which deposit and withdrawal methods are available to British customers, and any fees
- The wagering, maximum bet, expiry and cashout terms of any bonus
- Whether deposit limits, loss limits and self-exclusion are available
- How complaints are handled and who you can turn to if they fail
- Who owns the casino
Verification and why it protects you
Expect identity (KYC) checks before a withdrawal. Sites may ask for photo ID, proof of address, and sometimes evidence of where your money came from. This is not a trick. It helps prevent underage play and fraud. Be wary of any site that never asks, or that makes it unclear what is required. Upload documents only through the site's secure account area.
